How to Replace a Run Capacitor

Has your run capacitor on your motor gone bad and you are trying to replace it? This is a step-by-step guide on replacing the run capacitor.

Tools Needed:

  • Pliers
  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Voltmeter or Multimeter

Step 1

Turn the Power Off at the Breaker

Turn the power off to the motor by flipping the breaker.

Step 2

Removing the Capacitor Cover

Use a Philips-head screwdriver to remove the cover screws on either side of the capacitor doghouse.

(Keep the two screws you will need them later.)

Step 3

Safety First

Use a voltmeter (or multimeter) to make sure there is no power going to the motor.

Step 4

Discharge the Capacitor

 Use your screwdriver to neutralize any charge that the old capacitor still has.

Step 5

Removing the Capacitor Wires

Use a pair of pliers to remove the wires carefully so you don’t damage them.

Step 6

Installing the New Capacitor

Plug in the new capacitor with your pliers.

Step 7

Reattaching the Capacitor Cover

Reinstall the cover with the screws you kept using a Philips head screwdriver.

Step 8

Turn the Power Back on at the Breaker

Turn the breaker back on to resupply power back to the motor.
