How to Replace a Start Capacitor

If your pool pump motor does not start or makes only a humming sound when you turn it on, then you may have a bad start capacitor. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to replace your pump motor’s start capacitor.

Tools Needed:

  • Pliers
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Voltmeter or Multimeter
  • Philips head screwdriver

Step 1

Turn the Power Off at the Breaker

Turn the power going to the motor off by flipping the breaker.

Step 2

Removing the Motor Back Cover

Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the two screws and remove the back cover.

Step 3

Safety First

Use a voltmeter (or multimeter) to ensure power to the motor has been cut off

Step 4

Discharge the Capacitor

 Discharge the old capacitor using the flathead screwdriver by contacting both capacitors’ leads simultaneously.

Note: Discharging the capacitor may cause a spark

Step 5

Removing the Saddle Clip

Use a Philips-head screwdriver to unscrew the saddle clip.

Step 6

Remove the Capacitor Wires

Use a pair of pliers to remove the wires from the capacitor.

Note: Take a picture of the wires to reconnect the new capacitor correctly. Mark ends with tape if needed.

Step 7

Reconnect the Motor Wires into the Capacitor

Plug the motor wires back into the new capacitor the same way your old one was hooked up.

Step 8

Reattach the Saddle Clip

Use a flathead screwdriver to reinstall the back cover.

Step 9

 Reinstall the Motor Cover

Use a flathead screwdriver to reinstall the back cover.

Step 10

Turn the Power Back on at the Breaker

Flip the breaker to give power back to the motor.
