Do You Need to Shock Your Pool Every Week?

Do You Need to Shock Your Pool Every Week?

Have you heard the old advice, “Shocking your pool once a week is the only way to keep it clean and clear”? This common pool myth has stuck around for decades, but it’s far from the full story. While shocking can be helpful in certain situations, it’s not a magic weekly solution. In reality, consistent sanitation, balanced water chemistry, and proper circulation play a much bigger role in keeping your pool clean, safe, and crystal clear.

As proud purveyors of pool shock, we are usually more than happy to see someone using it. But there’s a fine line between using it and wasting it. Pool shock is really only required to spike active chlorine levels to counter some negative impact.

Generally, you’d limit pool shock use to jumpstarting pool chlorination, for example, you’d shock the pool after a drain and fill, or while opening the pool.

Another common use-case is to boost your chlorine levels after heavy swimmer loads, like a pool party, or heaven forbid, a poo party. Don’t get us wrong, if you’re doing it, and it works for you, go for it.

But if your pool water chemistry is within normal ranges, and the water is clear and clean. We suggest saving the shock and just being awed at a job well done.

But if you need pool shock, a replacement pump motor, cartridge, pool liner, or anything else for your pool and spa, come visit us over at InyoPools.com.
