  • Normally Heat pumps are the least expensive option to heat your pool from operational cost standpoint.
  • If you live in an area where electricity is extremely expensive then Natural gas may become more enticing as the operational cost savings of a heat pump become less.
  • A gas heater will heat your pool much quicker than a heat pump but normally costs more to do so.
  • A heat pump draws in the outside air to heat your water so once the air temperature reaches 50 degrees they are pretty inefficient.
  • A gas heater is usually a good choice for a spa as a heat pump takes to long to heat a spa, and if you want to get in the spa in lower outside temps. a heat pump is inefficient.
  • Heat pumps cost about $2,500 and gas heaters are in the $1,500 range.

I think it all depends on the regions you stay. For us it’s ok, but when we lived in Spain, the electricity was so damn expensive, we were afraid to connect the light!

That reminds me if I ever move to Spain, I need to bring my own generator.

We have an approximately 20×40 oval inground pool in East Hampton, NY. Use only in warmer months but needs replacement with another Laars heater. Any way to figure cost of heater plus labor by pool heater person for total cost? Electricity connection and tubing for indoor oil storage tank already installed. We’ve been given a figure of $12,000-=$15,000 for complete job, which seems high to me.

We do not offer oil-fired heater, only natural gas and propane units. I do not know what the typical pricing is on one of those or their installation. The best way to find out typical installations costs are is to contact multiple companies for their estimates.

I live in southern Ontario Canada and unfortunately the way our pool is designed in our yard gas is not an option for us. We are looking at a Raypack 27 KW heater to heat our in groung pool. It is 16 by 32 with a deep end of 9 feet. As you know it is cold in May. We would like to extend our season from mid April to October. July and August we do not need heat. A heat pump in Canada will not extend my pool season. Do you think using a solar cover with the above Electric heater will be effective or is it going to be insane money to heat?

I had a lot of trouble finding reliable information so I just went ahead and heated my pool. I live in the Atlanta, GA and my first full month of heating it was from March 15 to April 15. It’s a lagoon style inground pool with depths varying from 3 to 8 feet, my guess is it’s a medium sized inground pool of around 25,000 gallons with 2 water features plus a built in hot tub that shares the same heater. The water features have to run 24/7 because otherwise there is a leak we haven’t fixed yet at the motor, which doesn’t leak if it’s running, so we have some evaporation due to that (but it’s worth it for the waterfall sound!). Natural Gas is VERY cheap right now at 33 cents per therm plus your various taxes and fees. So, my gas bill for that period was $306.23. We kept the pool at 90 degrees, and the kids actually turned it up to 95 for a few days and forgot to turn it back down. The only time the pool heater wasn’t on is we were heating the hot to tub to between 100 and 104. We did not use much heat in the house in that period but we do have other gas utilities. My best guess is that about $200 of the bill went to heating the pool. My current plan is to heat it from March – November and just use the hot tub December – February. Hope this info helps anyone wondering if it’s going to cost $1000 a month like I was afraid it was.

I’m looking to put up an indoor above ground pool (9×18) It has about 4,500 gallons of water. I was looking at the
Raypak E3T Digital Spa Electric Heater | 11kW 37,534 BTU | Titanium Heat Element | 240V | ELS-R-0011-1-T1 017122 ELS-M-0011-1-TI 017126 for our heating source. The ambient room temperature will be around 73 degrees year round. Any idea on the cost to heat this per hour and how many hours a day I’ll need to run it to maintain a temperature of 85 degrees? Thanks in advance for your help!
