- Should I replace my multiport valve diverter or the whole key seal assembly?
Now here’s your hosts – Matt and Rob.
The stem of my multiport diverter broke. Should I get a whole key seal assembly, or just replace the diverter?

I would typically recommend replacing the whole key and seal assembly. Replacement of the diverter isn’t the easiest thing to do. The process
of changing the diverter is a tough one: first, you must compress the valve handle, so you may tap out the pivot pin. This step is, at least, a two-person job because you will need one person to hold down the multiport valve handle while the other person taps out the pin. The spring is a heavy duty stainless steel that is a real beast to keep compressed. Top give you an idea how tough the spring is, in the “How to Replace a Multiport Valve Spring” guide, our tech uses his feet to compress the spring while tapping in the handle pin.
But, when you’re replacing the multiport valve’s key and seal assembly, the steps are significantly simpler. The steps consist of removing the 6 to 8 valve head screws pulling out the old assembly, then dropping in the new one. Make sure you align the notch or hitch on the valve body and the new cover, to make sure the diverter is properly aligned over the multiport valve pipes.
