The Most Common Swimming Pool Heater Problems

Installing and troubleshooting a heater that is still under warranty without proper licensing can forfeit your warranty under the manufacturer’s terms and conditions. If your heater is out of warranty, sometimes, it’s simply cheaper to do it yourself. If you yourself in this scenario, this blog article is for you. In this blog article, we cover the most common swimming pool heater problems a pool owner might encounter and remedies to fix the issue.

My Heater Won’t Ignite

One of the most common problems with pool heaters is it failing to ignite.

Is your heater turned ON and the temperature set correctly?

  • Ensure that the thermostat is set to a higher temperature than the current water temperature.

Is your pump running with a clean filter and basket?

  • Inspect the pump and filter and clean if necessary.

Make sure that the pilot is lit (millivolt heaters).

  • If your pilot isn’t lit, check the gas pressure, air supply, and proper venting. Make sure the pilot tube is intact and not clogged. For MV heaters, if the pilot won’t stay lit, check the output on the thermocouple.

Is the gas supply valve in the ON position?

  • Without gas, the heater won’t operate. If the supply valve is OFF, turn it ON.

Are the plumbing and filter valves open?

  • Make sure to keep your valves open as to not prevent the water flow.

Low Water Flow

In order for a heater to operate smoothly and efficiently, it’s important that pool system maintains a consistent flow of water. Manufacturers equip swimming pool heaters with pressure sensors. These special sensors monitor and detect changes in water flow. For example, in some cases, you will see a “Low Water Flow” warning pop up on your heater’s LCD screen. Or, you might notice your heater isn’t pushing out as much warm water as it should or used to. Honestly, this is a very common occurrence. If you are experiencing low water flow, or your heater won’t start, ask yourself the following questions:

Have you cleaned your filter lately?

  • Monitor your PSI reading on your filter’s pressure gauge. If the PSI is too high, clean your filter.
  • Increasing pressure goes hand in hand with the decrease of water flow.

Is your pump basket dirty?

  • Check your pump’s strainer basket. Remove the basket and remove the debris with a hose.
  • Ensure the pump basket and lid are in good conditions. No cracks.

Do you have too many water features operating at once?

  • Your pool pump only moves a certain number of GPMs, therefore, too many water features can dramatically decrease your water flow.
  • If possible, replace the motor with a larger one.
  • Close water features, or alternate them, until the pool heats to the desired temperature.

Defective Pressure Sensor/switch (Most Common)

  • The purpose of the pressure switch is to ensure that water is flowing through the unit before it allows the heater to turn on.
  • The pool pump must be ON and your filter clean for the switch to close and allow voltage to pass through.
  • Test the voltage reading on the pressure switch with a multimeter.
  • Replace the pressure switch if necessary

Are you using the low settings on your variable speed pump?

  • For operation, heaters require a minimum GPM flow. If you are running your variable speed pump on the low setting, make sure you meet the minimum GPMs for your heater.

Pool Heater Turns ON and OFF (Cycles)

If your swimming pool heater is cycling ON and OFF, it is an early indication that the electrical connection or power supply is experiencing issues. However, it isn’t ALWAYS the case. There are other factors that can actively contribute to your heater’s ON and OFF cycles.

Is your pool water chemistry consistently and accurately balanced?

  • Poor water chemistry is one of the leading causes of equipment failure, especially pool heaters.
  • Test your water before adjusting your chemical levels. If unsure, please refer to the heater’s manual for the recommended chemical levels.

Have you inspected the pressure sensor, thermal regulator, and/or the high limit switch?

  • Inspect these parts for corrosion, scaling, and/or any electrolysis issues.
  • If the pressure sensor, thermal regulator, or high limit switch is faulty, corroded, or defective- replace it.

Have you cleaned your filter?

  • A dirty filter can cause low pressure and as a result, cause the heater’s pressure switch to turn OFF. A dirty filter can prevent a heater from firing and it can also cause your heater to shut off before warming the water to the desired temperature.

When’s the last time you have inspected and cleaned the heat exchanger?

  • Deterioration of the heat exchanger can impact your heater’s operation. Inspect your heat exchanger for chemical or sanitizer damage.

Pool Heater Isn’t Heating

Sometimes, your pool heater ignites but doesn’t reach the desired temperature. Or, maybe your heater isn’t generating heat at all. Both situations are very common.

Inspect your temperature sensor.

  • Make sure you have installed the temperature sensor correctly and it is in good condition.

Double check your thermostat settings

  • Set your thermostat to a higher temperature.

Did you properly size your pool heater?

  • If your heater is undersized, it will have problems heating your pool up. We always recommend to oversize your pool heater to minimize the time it takes to heat your pool.

Ok, I’m at my wits end. I read everything about D.E. going back into your pool. I have taken apart the Hayward 4820 filter over and over. There is no cracks in the standpipe, the o-ring is good on it. The manifold also has no cracks in it. I checked every grid for rips . The filter is running at 10psi with a clean startup and stays running that way. My return lines do not have the D.E. blowing out when I’m filtering for hours. The pool is clean. When the filter is off that’s when it seems the DE appears . I read there can be a suction leak. I do not have air bubbles. I replaced the gasket on the lid. I also opened the multiport and the spider gasket is in good condition. So why I’m I finding light grey D.E. in my pool everyday when I wake up. I will say my motor has been acting up and is ready to go!!! Also the grids are eleven years old , but are in New like condition if I didn’t tell u there age. Is there something I’m missing here?

The only other thing I can think of is filter backflush. If your system loses prime when the pump shuts off, water inside the filter tank will go two ways, through the returns or backflush through the pump and out of the suction lines. I saw this phenomenon rear its head in a pool just the other day. We depressurized the system to install a salt chlorine generator, then when we started back up we noticed a heap of DE powder by the main drain.

    2. Larry S. Avatar

Had same problem. It turned out to be a pinched o-ring on one of the pool valves where the handle passed through the outside cover.

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

The smallest of gaskets can cause the biggest of problems. Good troubleshooting.

I have a Pentair MiniMax Plus HP and it does not seem to be heating. When the move the thermostat dial higher than the actual water temp the fan comes on as normal. There is a delay before the compressor tries to kick on. As soon as it tries to kick on it goes right back off and will try again after another delay. Any ideas why this would be happening and how to troubleshoot?

        Thanks

        1. Sarah Spilka Avatar

Did you ever solve your problem? We have a Pentair MasterTemp 250, and the gas comes on perfectly. Then after 10 minutes or up to 1 hour the heater turns off! well before it has reached the set temperature. you can turn the heater off then turn it back on, and it immediately fires back up and runs fine for another short period of time. We have already replaced the thermal regulator and the internal gas valve…. ANY suggestions?

Did you ever figure it out? I am having the same problem with the same heater?

          2. Martha Avatar

            Same problem here!
            Any suggestions yet?

          3. Hibby Avatar

I think this is caused by insufficient water pressure to the heater. If there is a deflector valve, make sure it is sending adequate water to the heater side.

          4. Avatar

I had this same problem. A key characteristic of my issue was that the blower was still running. With that, there are only a few things that control the gas valve while the blower still runs. The hi-temp sensors and the blower sensor. To test this, the hi-temp sensors are on the heat exchanger (two twin sensors on the left of the exchange when looking at the front). Pull the red wires and jump them with a paper clip and run. If the same problem exists, do the same with the blower sensor (the round sensor mounted to the outer case). If the problem exists after that, you’re where I was, very frustrating. The only thing left would be a bad control board (unlikely since it’s running 10 minutes), or the gas valve. I changed out the gas valve and it’s been running perfectly ever since. Hope this helps.

          5. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Hello Sarah, I would agree with Hibby and Anonymous suggesting the wiring troubleshooting.

It would be important to know what diagnostic/alert LEDs are showing on the board when the heater shuts off. The back of the control module shows a fault guide so that you can translate the blinking LEDs. Knowing this code would show you where to concentrate your efforts.

            minimax control module

Checking water flow is the simplest to troubleshoot. I’d check your filter’s current psi level, then give it a thorough backwash or spray down the cartridges. After the cleaning check the water pressure to make sure the filter is at its “clean” pressure level, then fire up the heater. Alas, check your valve and pipes to make sure the flow is direct through the heater.

bought a brand new Hayward H100
had it installed and now there is no power going to the ignition
everything else has power except for the purple and two white wires going into the ignition switch, which is in the on position.
      any ideas??
      thanks

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Either there is a loose connection or the ignition defective. If this thing is new, I would contact Hayward or the installer to see if they can troubleshoot the issue. Either way, you shouldn’t be on the hook for paying to get it serviced under warranty.

Do you have a push pull valve or a multivalve.. The orings on the P/P or the diverter spider gasket are bad..change them out with oem replacments

    5. Avatar

I noticed the variation from the location of the sensors in the time of the recall and after I boiled the calcium out of my header heat exchange it stop popping and crackling started to do it again I changed out the service backflow so unit still appears to be clean I have plenty of flow whatever happened to the old fashioned Teledyne Laars in years you put in didn’t have to worry about him for 30 years no electronics no gadgets no whistles no Bells they just worked

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Teledyne Laars redesigned, got bought by Jandy, and then redesigned again. Seemingly every evolution became more complex, that is why I usually do not recommend them. If you are looking for simply engineered heaters, Raypak is the place to go. You can see whyRaypak is the choice to go within this comparison guide Product Battle Series 2: Hayward Heater Vs. Raypak Heater. I know it is Raypak vs Hayward, but the complexity of the Jandy and Hayward are similar.

change your check valve between pool pump and filter if leaking through it will empty D.E. back into pool

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

See how to find air leaks in your plumbing lines and valves in this guide/video: How to test for suction side air leaks

Ok, I have a new Hayward HP50TA Heat pump. Works fantastic. Very efficient and quiet. What I can’t figure out is how to get it to turn off when the pump turns off. When 5e pump stops on its timer, if the pool is not at the set temp, the heat pump shuts the fan off and goes into FLo mode (low water flow) mode, but does not shut off. Shouldn’t the heat pump power off when the pump is not running?

    1. Jeff Avatar

It’s normal to say no flow and hibernate until the pool motor comes back on. Your fine…

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

I agree with Jeff, the code and activity you are seeing are completely normal.

  3. Jon Scott Avatar

My gas pool heater shut off because of no water flow. I have tried everything i can think of to get it to turn back on. I have tried flipping the breaker, checking all the connections in the heater. What do i do next?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

What model is your pool heater? Also, have you checked your system’s flowmeter or filter’s pressure gauge to determine if your flowrate has slowed?

    2. Avatar

Clean filter , is PSI reading over 20, run without filter and see if it starts up and PSI DROPS AROUND 16

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

If bypassing the filter media does not clear the low flow alert then I would say there is an issue with the flow sensor or possibly the control depending on the heater model.

  4. Peter B Avatar

What would be a likely cause of a Raypak 266 gas pool heater to have close to a 10 degree (higher) difference than the pool water itself?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Could be a bad temp sensor, or we have seen where the temp sensor rides upward and out of the sensor well. Usually, this occurs if there was water left to freeze in the bottom of the header, and the ice forces the sensor upward; then the sensor is reading cabinet temp rather than water temp.

    Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me figure out what is happening to my heater. I have a Hayward heater and ProLogic unit that operates all equipment.
Everything seems to be working fine, with the exception, that the heater is always ON. The ProLogic unit is set to Heater OFF, but the heater still turns on. Have you ever heard of this situation? Any ideas how to fix it?
    Thank you!

    1. Bebe Avatar

I have the same set up, and I’ve come home on two separate occasions to the heater having turned on and the pool being over 97 degrees. I do not know why it is turning on. when I want to use the heater I have to physical press the buttons on the heater!

    2. Ed Avatar

I have the same problem, any help would be appreciated. I replaced the bezel and keyboard assembly as old unit was not working at all. Worn out my weather.

    3. Matthew Simmons Avatar

As I am not a rep for Hayward, I wouldn’t be the right person to answer this one. But, it could be that the heater isn’t correctly wired to the pro logic or that isn’t properly set up in the settings of the pro logic.

My Pentair 200 heater will turn on and red service light on immediately, the blower turns on, then the burner lights up runs for about 20 seconds and shuts off, blower cycles for about 60 seconds and shuts off, but board is frozen, no buttons on or off or temp control work unless I kill power, and I have done obvious filter cleaned, water flow good, gas is on, any suggestions

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

What is the model number of the heater? There are a lot of Pentair heaters with 200 as a BTU rating.

      1. Robin D Avatar

        Hi
With the Hayward pro system panel is the heater set to pool or standby
We just had the ignition switch changed but it said bo and was on standby
I have switched it to pool. Is that correct ?

        1. Robin D Avatar

Is it normal to smell gas after ignition was changed earlier today ?

    2. Avatar

Blow on the hose to the pressure switch and make it shift. Follow the rubber hose. One side is suction and the other is discharge. Either blow on the hose or suck on the suction side. It will manipulate it and force it to shift. If you don’t want to do that then you can always just jump it out. Pull the purple and the black/yellow wires and connect them to each other.

Pool water was overheating. Was told thermostats
were a common problem. Replaced both thermostats
still have the same problem. (It’s an in ground, in Georgia, was fine last year. It was just filled to prep for season.)

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

First, we need to know what type of heater it is. What is the model number of the heater? Knowing the make and model of a heater can narrow the possibilities of what is causing the issue.

Are there any codes flashing before or after it switches to Standby mode?

    Hi Matthew,

My Raypak 266A popped the roll out fuse. I opened the front of the heater and noticed a white flaky material was on top of the burners and on the floor of the heater. I cleaned out about an 1/8th of a cup of this material. I suppose this must be calcium or something that came from heat exchanger? What do you think?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Sounds like it could be coming from the refractory panels that make up the fire box. Is there any indication of pest infestation in the cabinet (on top of the heat exchanger, or in the junction box)? Had the heater been leaking or condensing? Moisture could cause the refractory to delaminate.

  11. Ross Avatar

Raypak 106a. Turns on and clicks for a while trying to light, but never does. Clicks constantly trying to light for several minutes. Flow switch is good. Sensors have continuity. High limit is good. Gas line is clear.

Thinking motherboard or gas valve. Easiest way to diagnose this?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Is the knob on the gas valve turned to ON? Was the air bled from the gas line?

Check for 24volts at the pilot valve- red wire on gas valve. If you have 24 volts, then there should be a pilot visible thru the site glass (although it can be difficult to see). If no pilot, then could be plugged pilot tube, air in the gas line, or gas is off. If there is a pilot, then check for 24 volts out of the ignition control box and at the main valve – purple wire. If we have 24 volts out of the ignition control but not at the valve, then the wire or connections are bad. If we have 24 volts at the valve, then the valve could be bad or stuck. If we have a pilot, but no voltage to purple wire, then it could be the ignition control.

    2. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Bleed air from the gas line, then look to see if the pilot is lighting. If no pilot, confirm that gas in turned on at the shutoff and on the gas valve in the heater. If still no pilot, check for 24v on the red wire leading to the gas valve. If we have 24v on the red wire, then the pilot valve should be open. Confirm by disconnecting the pilot tube from the gas valve- when the heater is sparking, there should be gas coming out of that hole. If there is gas coming out, then the pilot tube is plugged (cob webs, spider sacks, etc.) and needs to be blown out or cleaned. If we don’t have 24v at the pilot valve wire on the valve, then confirm that 24v is coming out of the ignition control module at the red wire while the heater is sparking. WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE: DO NOT TOUCH THE HIGH TENSION SPARK WIRE ON THE IGNTION CONTROL WITH POWER TO THE HEATER. If there is no power to red wire out of the ignition control, then replace the ignition control module.

If there is a pilot, but heater doesn’t fire, then check all of the wires and connections leading from the gas valve to the ignition control module (particularly the ground wire) for missing insulation, heat damage, etc . If okay, then check for 24v at the purple wire leading the gas valve (with pilot lit). If we have 24v at the purple wire then the heater should fire. If not, still air in the gas line, or a bad valve.

If we don’t have 24v at the purple wire, then check for 24v out of the ignition control module. If no power out, then the ignition control is bad.

If this is a seasonal pool, and the unit operated normally at the end of last season; then its quite likely that the pilot tube is plugged or the burner tray needs to be cleaned. Hope that this helps.

Rypak 185B turns on, ignites and burner seems to be working well. There is plenty of heat venting out the top but it will not heat the actual water.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Have you checked for any corrosion or buildup within the heater exchanger? Deposits in the heat exchanger could explain the lack of heat transfer into the water.

    2. Thomas Avatar

My temperature gauge won’t go up it go down but it won’t go up what could be the problem

My guess would be a bad temperature gauge, but it would help to know if you are getting any error codes and the model number of the heater. Ca

I have an old Jandy gas pool heater. Externally, it is in pristine condition because it’s located in my basement (not by choice, I bought the house that way).

Very recently, the pool heater has been going on and off when the pool itself is OFF. It was happening again last night, and I had to turn the unit off manually. I then drained some water through the pressure relief valve that was literally hot enough to make tea.

There is no backflow valve in the piping, but this unit has worked properly for the 9 years I’ve lived here. Any suggestions?

I just had a brand new Hayward H150 Natural Gas heater installed…. it is intermittently kicking out the LO code while the pump is running. It’ll run fine for 30 minutes, shut down because of the LO error, kick back on, rinse and repeat throughout the time we’re trying to use the heater. Filter PSI reads 11PSI (normal post-backwash PSI is around 10). I’ve tried having just the skimmer valve open, then tried both skimmer and main drain open at the same time… same issue comes up. Hayward support hasn’t been particularly helpful. Would love your thoughts!

I have a brand new Hayward 3000 btu pool heater. It light and fires up tgen shuts right back off

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Since it’s brand new, did you have the service company that installed it come back out to check the issue? Most new units experiencing a problem is usually an issue caused by the installation process. Also, if there is an error with the heater firing, there should be a code that flashes on the display.

    2. Mike.kohler58@gmail.com Avatar

Joe, I have the exact same issue. Pool company said it was an igniter issue and ordered a new part. After replacing still had identical problem. Now saying it is the gas pressure. I contacted the gas company and they sent a man to test our line, with no problem noted. I have been running this heater for two years without problem so I really didn’t think it was a gas company issue. I tried calling Hayward direct and they said I needed a certified Hayward technician and they couldn’t diagnose over the phone. Funny the person I called originally was a Hayward technician. Maybe they need more training. If you figured out your problem I would appreciate the advice. Thanks, MIKE

What is the model number of your heater?

    2. Matthew Simmons Avatar

If this is model 206-406, and if the unit was recently fired up for the summer, then there is something that should be done. Spiders sometimes get into the burners and leave sacks behind. The sacks are round and sticky, so cannot be sucked or blown out. Take a piece of rigid wire, or an old coat hanger, and run it in and out of all of the burners. This can be done WITHOUT removing the burner tray itself. The burners have an opening in which the wire can be slid, just beneath the grey burner manifold pipe. This should only take 5-10 minutes and should be part of a spring cleaning routine. After running the wire in and out of all of the burners, fire the heater and examine the flame. There should be a well defined 4-5” blue flame with a little orange at the tips. If all else is good (adequate gas pressure, no soot buildup, etc.) then this should solve the rollout issue.

I turn on the heater, green light is on pool and water temp says 73. there are no red lights. I raise the temp and the service system red light comes on. I took off the shell and vacuumed out all the debris. Took out my cartridge filters and cleaned them. Have a Hayward HeatPro HP21404T that is 4 years old. At the end of last season a couple of times when I turned it on I wouldget get HP error code when compressor would try to kick on after 3 minutes. It would reset then after 3 minutes it worked as normal. This year when I tried using it for the first time the breaker would trip every time the compressor would try to kick on. After HVAC tech authorized by Hayward opened it up he couldn’t find the problem but it went back to the HP error and then reset then it would work fine. Yesterday when I went to turn it off the display was not showing the temperature but was showing it was in pool mode and heating. Flow rate is 48 gpm through it. Is this a control board issue?

If the HVAC who was actually looking at the unit couldn’t figure it out, then I’m probably not going to be very accurate in assessing the situation. Best guess would be a bad pressure sensor or a dirty filter. But the below is the manual explanation o the code:

HP & HP3 – Low water flow to the unit or faulty high-pressure control. Check water flow. Backwash filter and/or heater. The unit will show HP3 after
3 HP faults. This will stop your heater for protection.

      1. Dustin Avatar

On the pressure sensor is the water in the tube supposed to go all the way to the switch? Mine stops short about 6 inches from reaching it.

Matt- I bought a house with a smaller in-ground pool (approx 15′ x 30′, 3.5′ shallow, 5′ deep) that has a gas powered Raypak P-R206A-EN-C. Heater is 9 years old, worked great last summer- would heat the pool to temp in an hour or so, with very warm- almost hot- water pumped into the pool. This summer the heater fires up fine, plenty of heat coming from the unit, but water pumping in is luke-warm, and takes hours to get to 85, where it peaks out. The pool service company I inherited looked at it (unannounced while no one was home) and said the heater “couldn’t be working better” and that if I wanted more heat, they could install a bigger heater. This does not sound right… thoughts?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

A lot depends on what region in which the heater is located, as to the heat rise per hour. In the Midwest this year- without a cover- it has been difficult to achieve a decent heat rise- until a couple of days ago.

Pool heaters do not modulate, they are either on or off- delivering a blended delta T of about 6- 8 degrees (inlet pipe to outlet pipe) no matter the pool or air temperature. I’m guessing that the service company confirmed that the heater was not shutting off intermittently and was running at a proper delta T. If so, then the heater is doing what it can do, though the water may feel different coming from the return- depending on the pool temp. A solar cover would help with heat loss, but that model heater is very capable of recovering heat loss in that size pool. Hope this helps.

When the heater is shutting off, is it giving a service code on the display? Could be shutting off due to low water flow to the heater “O”. Or if F2, F3, or F4 is coming up then it is a sensor problem. Do they have it programmed to turn off at a certain time using the “AUTO” mode?

I guess you have no idea.

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Sorry, your question got skipped, fell behind because of vacation. In the interim, I would have suggested contacting the manufacturer for their expertise.

As for the blower being hot, that is pretty standard because it is sitting over the heat exchanger and next to the exhaust stack. You may want to make sure you have the circular insulation mat that sits between the blower’s flange and the stack. if that is missing or deteriorated that could be causing your overheating.

Hello I have a Rheem 8350 pool heater. The pool heater states it’s 104 and keeps shutting off but the actual temperature is 84 what could be wrong.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

It could be a bad temp sensor. But, that model uses two sensors with different Ohm ranges. There is a way to check that the PC board is reading the right range.
The best thing to do is to call the heat pump service line 800-375-7378, and they can walk you through the process. You will need to be at the unit and will need serial number and date of installation handy.

I have a Raypak 280 swim pool heater and the temp is set 32 Deg. I can see the the pilot light and the gas being lit but it goes off just after few seconds. The pump pressure is good, i can see the water travelling into the heater through the clear check valve. the gas tap is on at all times. have anyone came across this fault ever.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

This is symptomatic of low gas pressure or low water flow. If propane, check the level of fuel in the tank. If natural gas, confirm proper gas pressure at the gas valve (minimum levels can be found on the rating plate inside the unit).
Is there a fault indicated on the control panel?
If water flow is insufficient (less than 1.6 lps), then it could be tripping one of the overtemp sensors. Confirm proper water flow through the heat exchanger. Clean and/or backwash the filter. Empty all baskets. If not, it could be scale or blockage inside the exchanger.

    Hi,
Thank you in advance for any insight you may have on this. Our pool/spa heater wasn’t heating the spa much. Temperature would rise a little, but it wasn’t getting the water hot. Water from the jets didn’t feel much warmer than the spa water. The heater seemed to be getting hot. Our home warranty replaced the heater today (Hayward 400FDP) after 2 hours the water went from 56 to 78. Water from the jets still doesn’t seem any warmer than the spa water. Outside temperature mid 60’s. It used to heat to 100 in about a half hour. There is plenty of propane.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

If it was just installed and you are having issues, you should get the company back out there to take a look at the heater. You may want to check that only the spa is being heated, not a combination of the pool and spa. There could be an issue with the gas line not being big enough which is an issue if you upped the size of the heater from the old one. The latter should definitely be checked by a professional.

I got everything installed and the heater starts and fires up and the shuts off and gives a IF code. I checked when it was dark outside so i could see the flame glowing in the sight glass. Don’t know what to do now……?????

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

My first thought/question, why didn’t you buy a propane heater to begin with? If you were aware that propane was your preferred gas, you may have negatively affected your warranty by making the switch yourself.

I suggest you call a professional to come take a look if you are having any issues. This is a troubleshooting guide Hayward uses, but again, I suggest you call a professional.

      1. Chad Avatar

Hey I do understand, but I got a big discount on the heater itself. Anyway, regarding the code, I believe that it is a gas line issue, I will be installing a new gas line and regulator and see of that helps.

We left our pool heater on last night and forgot to remove the pump timer switch so the pump turned off but the heater was still on. It had an error code of “low flow”. Now the heater ignites and runs but makes a low pitched whining noise andcthe water does not feel very warm out of the jets. Did we ruin our new 2019 jandy gas heater?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Where the whining began after the heater fired dry; that could be scale that developed inside the exchanger while the heater ran with superheated water going through the exchanger. In this case, is the heater below the level of the pool, and if so, how many feet below? If the heater is located more than 5 feet below the body of water, then the atmospheric weight of the water is enough to close the contacts of the pressure switch allowing the heater to fire. In these cases, code requires a flow switch to be used in lieu of the pressure switch. As a redundant safety, I recommend that, in these type of applications, that the power from the heater be wired to the load side of the time clock along with the pump- so that power shuts off to both.

Can you tell where the sound is coming from within the heater? Is it coming from the gas line, gas valve or the exchanger? There might be multiple problem areas.

I have a Jandy Pool Heater, model LT400N-L (made 6-2006) and it stopped working. Red light on Pressure Switch. I put it on the to-do list for about 2 years. Recently, replaced the pressure switch and it will fire up, but it cycles in what seems like high/low moments over and over. Water is flowing, fan comes on, I see the flame in the tiny peep hole. Fan comes on 35 seconds, then a cycle of warm air comes out and fan gets louder for 15 seconds, then warm air ends and fan seems to drop a speed. During the warm air/ high fan cycles, the water does pump in hot into the spa. I have the Jandy PDA and the AquaLink RS cabinet–water temp registers spa=74 on the PDA and I have the temp set to reach target 102. The high limit switches are in excellent condition visibly but I still bypassed them with a jumper, no change. I found the diagnostic flow chart online, tested all the voltages, all was well until step 7=”After approximately 30 to 40 seconds of igniter heat up, is there 24 VAC at VAL terminal of the Ignition Control?” For as long as I kept the probe on that terminal, the brown wire (VAL) on the ignition control module measured 0. Could it be the ICM? Before I gamble on such an expensive part, can I bypass/jump/test this brown terminal, or do you see something else I’ve missed?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

If you experience a rumbling/grumbling sound from the heater, you probably need to have the burner tray cleaned. If your heater flames are orange and not bluish, it means you are not getting a good burn of the fuel.

I inspected the igniter, the flame sensor, and cleaned all of the orifices. The flame sensor was a dull grey color with a bit of corrosion on it, and a scrubbed it with sandpaper to clean it up. The igniter has a bit of carbon build up but came off with my finger. Orifices were clean.
I suspect maybe it’s the flame sensor? Any other suggestions?
I had a pool guy out to look at it due to this issue a month ago. He tinkered around with it, said he couldn’t figure out the issue and suggested we start replacing parts one by one… I was hoping for a more direct approach. Then when he left the heater started working! So it’s been a month or more that it was running.

Is the pilot lighting? If so, then the proving signal is not getting back to the PC Board. Confirm that all gas valve wiring is intact and connections are solid. Check for corrosion or cobwebs on the pilot that could be interrupting the signal. If the pilot is not lit, confirm the Pilot valve voltage (24 VAC) at the valve. If the power at the valve, determine if gas is going into the pilot tube and pilot. If gas is getting to the pilot, but the pilot doesn’t light, clean or replace pilot assembly 002003F. If there is no gas coming from the energized pilot valve, replace valve. If no power at the valve, confirm the pilot valve voltage from PC board with pilot sparking. If no power, replace the board. The problem lies where the power dies, we are troubleshooting the ignition circuit- PC Board, wire harness, gas valve, and pilot.

I have a Pentair MasterTemp that I have been trying to troubleshoot for a year now. It calls for heat, heat starts for maybe 5-10 seconds, then stops, temp raises rapidly to 124 then slowly back down to 75 and cycles again doing the same thing over and over again. So far I have replaced the thermal regulator, igniter, thermistor and the bypass valve in the manifold.

Today, I did a bunch of troubleshooting.

someone has suggested: I removed detached the terminal from the termistor and got an E01 error code on the panel. I connected my old termistor and got a reading of 85 degrees. When I hold it, the temp slowly went up to 90. I then reconnected the terminal on the new terminstor and got 75 (I guess that’s the water temp).

When problem started happening last early last year, one of the thing I did was replaced a broken Jandy check valve between the heater and chlorinator. I also noticed that the flap wasn’t opening even at 3450rpm and 20-25psi. Although, there’s strong water coming out of the 2 return lines. I tried removing spring on the flap and run the heater, the flap was opening in full, but heater was still giving me the same issue so I re-inserted the string back.

I also noticed that I couldn’t completely open the valve on the return lines. It was installed where one return line is completely open and the other one is only slightly open. So, I opened the 3-port valve and adjusted it where the 2 return lines are fully open. I run the heater and this time it did something different. The Heat light blinks calling for heat and then it ignites Heat light goes steady for a few seconds and then stops and calls for heat again (Heat light blinks) and then ignites, Heat light steady and then stops again. It kept doing this several times and then sometimes the temp will start counting up rapidly and slowly counts down to the current temp and cycles again.

Note: when the opened the manifold last winter to replace the bypass, the manifold and the heat coils have no signs of scales. Water has always been in tip top shape. I only found 1 small stone stuck inside where the bypass is. So I thought that was causing the problem. Water
In case there is blockage in the heat exchanger, how do I fix that?

    Thanks for your advise.

Hello. I have a Hayward Easy Temp heater. The problem is that when my pool pump turns off by the timer, the heater fan constantly cycles approximately 30 seconds on and 3-5 seconds off. The compressor does not engage, just the fan. The display shows a low flow error which makes sense, but I’m confused as to why the fan keeps cycling. Thank you.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Is the water to temp when the pump shuts off? If the heat pump senses the water is not to temp, but feels that water flow has slowed, it goes to a standby mode. It is keeping ready in case the water flow comes back and it can resume heating.

I have a Hayward Titanium Heat pro model HP21104t model heat pump. Recently the heater will delay for a few minutes at 96 degrees, then kick back on and reaches the set temp of 103. Any idea why the delay in the heater? Thanks!

I have a Pentair Heater. Pentair Mastertemp Heater 460736 400K BTU Natural Gas. What is happening is we will use the heater to heat up the spa. The spa is about 500+ gallons of water. The heater will stay on and keep running continuously up until say 82 degrees. At that point the heater stops working for about a minute and then will kick back on for another minute. This goes on and on until the heater finally meets it’s set temperature. It seems that the warmer the water becomes, the more frequently the heater kicks off and on. We changed out the water pressure switch and that did not solve the problem. Pentair 470190 Water Pressure Switch Replacement Pool and Spa Heater. Any suggestions?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Are there any diagnostic LEDs lit or flashing? That would help go a long way in finding the solution.

My first guess is a thermistor or control module issue. But that is just a guess until I have the above info.

      1. john hildebrand Avatar

There are no diagnostics LEDs that flash. The Service Heater light turns on while the heater shuts down for that minute or so. Then the Service Heater lights goes off as the heater kicks on again.

        1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Then it sounds like you need to have a tech come to take a look at it. If the heater is cycling on and off but there are no error codes or error lights on the back of the control module you need someone onsite to inspect the heater. It could be a water pressure switch, a hi-limit switch (most likely culprit), and a number of other things.

Pentair 350. Only 5 months old is leaking out the bottom

        1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Unfortunately, neither one of us have x-ray vision. You have to open up the heater to find where the leak is coming from. It could be a header gasket that is causing the leak. There could be a defect in the heat exchanger caused by the manufacturing process or imbalanced water chemistry.

On-site inspection is the key to troubleshooting.

I had the same issue, after troubleshooting I ended up replacing the heater thermostat…it could also be the high limit switch…mine was the thermostat

I am not familiar with oil-fired heaters. Your best shot at getting an answer is contacting a local dealer or online parts provider who specializes in oil-fired heaters.

I have a Hayward H100ID that will not ignite. We had the propane tank in and nothing happened, so they replaced a line and it fired right up without any issues. I ran it for a half hour and went to turn it on the next day and now nothing again. It clicks, but will not light. All connections have been tested by an electrician with no issues also. Please help! I’m so frustrated.

Heat wont stay on rums heat for a min or 2 than heat shuts off

          1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Okay, Tony, I will ask the same question to you as well. Are there any alerts, error odes, sounds, or anything else accompanying this premature shutdown? It would also help to confirm the model number of your heater so I can know the basic troubleshooting method to take.

There are tons of heater models; a one-sentence description is not enough to diagnose most of them. Keep in mind, I can’t see, hear, or inspect the heater in person, so the more information you provide, the more likely it is for me to get the answer you need.

    2. Matthew Simmons Avatar

I’m sure the electrician did his best on the circuitry, but when dealing with a heater, you probably want to have an HVAC company take a look at the unit. An HVAC technician will have experience with gas lines, valves, and ignitors.

    Hi all.

I have a Hayward pool heater (model #H250FDN). Over the past week, the heater fired up and heated just fine. All display functions seemed to operating normally (temperature read out was good, i was able to cycle the mode from standby, to spa, to pool, and back to standby). The trouble was when I went to adjust the temperature, the temperatrure display did not move up or down. This weekend, when I finally had time to work on it, I see there is no power to the display at all: no service light, no heater light, no light or display of any kind. I checked the breaker and it is fine. The switch to the heater is on. I had a spare display board and swapped it with the same result.

Any thoughts on what I can do to further troubleshoot?

    Thanks

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

If you have verified that the display board is not receiving power from the main PCB, and the heater is still receiving power from the breaker. I would presume the main PCB is dead. Hayward’s troubleshooting process relies a lot on flashing error codes, but they aren’t much help when either of the boards is out.

I have the same heater. The same thing is happening to me. My front display board doesn’t go on at all. Electric line is fine. Were you able to troubleshoot the problem??

    3. Kenya Anderson Avatar

      Hi Bob,
I had this same problem. I had to purchase a new display board and cover (the part that we see). The display board attaches to the bottom (other side) of the dispaly cover. Once I replaced this I was able to see the lights again. Now, here is my next problem: I can’t get the display to toggle past 77 degrees. This is where my pool stops heating. My igniiton clicks, but then it fails to heat pas this point, sigh. I believe now it may be my thermostat. I’m going to work on this some more tomorrow. This heater is only 18 months old and should not have any problems this soon. I’ll keep you poste. I hope this helps.

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

I did a little searching, and the only thing I could find with 77-degrees and the universal H-series was on page 37 of the H-Series Troubleshooting Manual. It may be a sensor issue but there should also be codes flashing as well.

        Looking forward to Kenya’s update.

My MasterTemp 400 fails to work intermittently. All indicator lights go out and nothing I do makes them light up. Days later, they’re suddenly working again. Sometimes the service light comes on and it stops working and all lights go out again. Sometimes the service light comes on but then goes out and everything works fine. Do you think a new thermal regulator might be the answer?

          1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Is there a common thread between the times it does/doesn’t work? Has it just rained? Does it not restart after it’s been in heavy use? Does it not work on especially warm or cold days?

Have you checked the circuit feeding the heater to make sure it is providing the proper voltage?

I have a Hayward H350 propane heater with IO code displayed. I have replace the ignitor but still have same problem and display. Was told maybe the control board was bad ?,any thoughts

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

      From the manual:

IO – Igniter open error – If the control is not in lockout and senses that the igniter circuit is open when the blower is running the control will turn off the blower and go into lockout. Automatic restart 2 min after error is corrected.

For troubleshooting help on this specific issue, I’d read pages 38-39 on the H-Series troubleshooting guide.

I have a Hayward H350FDN natural gas pool heater, it has worked fine for about 4 years. The last time I tried to run it, won’t fire up. No error codes. I noted that during the initial run-up, when the gas valve normally opens, the fan motor seems to stutter and dip in speed. Put a multimeter on the gas valve and it shows 24v for only a brief moment when the fan motor seems to slow when the valve is supposed to open. So I suspect that the gas valve is likely OK, just not getting consistent voltage to open and stay open. Right now I suspect that the low-voltage transformer may be defective, but I’m curious if anyone else has seen these symptoms. Thanks.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

Does the display look as it should while it is starting up? After the heater fails to ignite, does the display stay on or go blank?

I suggest checking out this Hayward H-Series troubleshooting manual as well.

I have a Raypak gas heater. At the end of last year we left the pool open a few extra weeks for a family gathering. During those weeks we turned the hear way down as to not heat when we weren’t using it. The pilot was lit, but the heater wouldn’t fire. (Manual not electronic) I closed the pool. Now in spring I’m trying to get it to fire, but nothing. Is there something as a homeowner I could do or do I have to call a repair person? $3000 for a heater and now annual service calls? My previous heater lasted 20 years. Raypak, 20 weeks.

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

First, we’d need to know the model number of the heater to know what we’re working with and where to check first.

From the manual: SF – Thermistor Error – An excessive temperature difference between the two thermistors (5 °F or more) or an “out of bounds” condition on both sensors (less than 10°F or greater than 180°F) will result in the error code. Automatic restart is 2 minutes after the error is corrected.

I agree. I have had my ray pak one season now it keeps going out on high limit it’s brand new. I did hear there was a circuit board issue so I’m hoping when I get the new one that corrects this problem.

      1. Tracy Feighery Avatar

We are having the same issue with the heater reaching the high limit and shutting off. Heater is one year old.

        1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

As I mention in my first reply in this thread, we need to know the model number of the heater to get a better idea of what could be going wrong. If you would like a more accurate assessment, then we need more info.

When heater ignites, sounds like it’s not getting flow or something is in it , load noises, like grinding sounds

        1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

What is the model number of the heater? Also, are any error codes flashing when the heater fails to ignite?

          1. leonard shimko Avatar

I have the same problem of grinding noise when running with no codes and I have a H150FDP

          2. Matthew Simmons Avatar

I’d start by cleaning your filter either by hosing off the cartridge or backwashing; an obstruction in the gas line may also cause the grinding noise.

Do I need to replace the high and low temp sensors and if so do you have these parts

      1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

SF code – Thermistor error – An excessive temperature difference between the two thermistors (5 °F or more) or an “out of bounds” condition on both sensors (less than 10°F or greater than 180°F) will result in the error code. Automatic restart is 2 minutes after the error is corrected.

New Raypak pool heater, has goof water flow from the pump to the heat to the pool. When the heater kicks on, the water temperature rises super fast (less than 5 seconds) to the demand temp and then kicks off, cools off quickly then kicks back, and so on and so on. What would cause the temperature to rise so fast like that?

    1. Matthew Simmons Avatar

It doesn’t sound like you have enough water flow. How are you judging the strength of this water flow? Do you have a flowmeter? Are you sure you have the heater wired and plumbed in correctly?
