Welcome to another Pool Myths Debunked: A lot of pool owners assume a filter is a filter just turn it on and forget it. But that’s not how it works.
“There are three main pool filter types: sand, cartridge, and DE. To be clear, they all work on the same basic principle, push dirty water through a material or substance so it come out clean on the other side…
But each method has its pros, cons, and efficacy. Let’s start with sand filters.
Ranging from tanks that hold 50 up to 1000 pounds of sand, sand filters are the least expensive of the three, with middle-of-the-pack maintenance requirements, but can only filter dirt particles 30 to 40 microns wide.
Cartridge filters can sift dirt as small as 10- 20 microns; their compact single-cartridge models are great for cramped equipment pads, and quad-cartridge models can reduce filter washing to just once or twice a pool season.
But the best filtering filter is the diatomaceous Earth, able to trap dirt as small as 2 to 5 microns; DE filters keep your water the cleanest but also carry the biggest price tag, and require the most maintenance due to having to recharge the grids after each backwash, and they’re designs being so much more complex than sand or cartridge.
