Best Pool Products for Keeping Your Pool Open During Winter

Although Summer is simmering, and your pool water is still shimmering, thwe weary weeks of winter are forever trudging towards us. In other words, swimming season is coming to an end. For most Americans, that means it’s almost time to break out the pool cover, water tubes, and winterizing pool chemical kits.

But for us lucky few in the warmer states, pool closing is merely optional, or usually not a concern. Don’t get it twisted, just because we keep the pool open year-round doesn’t mean we’re swimming. The odd cold snap in a Florida winter is not enough to warrant blowing out your plumbing lines and packing up your equipment. For a lot of our autumn and winter, air and water temps ride that line of “swimmable”.

Freeze Protect Timers

Even the warmest states have to fight off a few cold days in winter, and unless you’re a Weather Channel enthusiast, they can sneak up on you. One extra cold night could mean a burst pool plumbing line, pump housing, filter tank, or anything else that contains water.

A pool freeze protect timer has a built-in thememeter that once triggered turns on your pump to circulate your water. Fun fact: moving water flowing through your plumbing is less likely to freeze than stagnant water. Most common freeze protect timers can be set to activate within a certain range of air temperatures, usually 34 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dummy Salt Cell

This is a bit of a special case. With winter comes cooler temps, and with cooler temps, there goes algae’s ability to grow. To help extend the life of your cell, we recommend removing your salt cell, replacing it with a dummy cell, then using a simple chlorine float to maintain chlorine levels.
